Our Team

Manuela Zamora, Executive Director

Raised in Bolivia, Manuela Zamora began her career as the Director of Logistics and Special Events on Sustainable Development in the Office of the First Lady of Bolivia before earning her Master’s in Education from Cambridge College in 2001. Shortly after, she founded her first organization, Fundación Carmen, where she created El Dorado: the Route of Fair Trade, a training program for low-income women artisans to learn skills in sustainable production and marketing. In 2008, she co-founded NY Sun Works’  Hydroponic Classrooms Initiative. For over a decade she has served as our Executive Director, steering our mission to transform New York’s educational landscape through a pioneering approach to sustainability science and climate education. Today, she resides in the heart of NYC, along with her husband and children.

Megan Nordgrén, Director of Development & Government Relations

Megan Nordgrén has always acted as an environmental advocate, working with domestic organizations such as NRDC and Green Corps, and on international projects with the United Nations and while on a Fulbright Fellowship in Estonia. When her oldest child entered kindergarten, Megan recognized the need for an improved sustainability and science education in NYC public schools, leading her to join NY Sun Works. Megan leads our Development and Government Relations team in helping schools discover, implement, and grow with our Hydroponic Classroom program. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Dave Hazan, Director of CEA Operations

Dave Hazan is an urban farmer specializing in hydroponic and aquaponic agriculture. He leads the Grow Support Team, dedicated to nurturing both plants and educators in our Hydroponic Classrooms. Prior to NY Sun Works, Dave helped build and maintain farms throughout the tri-state area. Born and raised in Venezuela, Dave has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and began his career in product development in China. Dave resides on Long Island with his wife, young son, two chickens and 350,000 honey bees.

Liz McKoy, Director of Education

With over 20 years in NYC education, Liz McKoy transitioned from science research to teaching science in Brooklyn. Holding a doctorate in Urban Education, her research centers on advancing equity in STEM fields. As NY Sun Works’ Director of Education and an adjunct Assistant Professor at Hunter College, Liz focuses on developing curricular content, pedagogy, and program assessments, leading a skilled team of NY Sun Works educators. Outside work, she enjoys family time, running her kids to soccer games, and hanging out with her dogs and cat.

Jeffrey Podell, Director of Finance

Jeffrey is a seasoned C-Suite executive and entrepreneur with over three decades of experience in finance, accounting, and operations. His career has been defined by leadership roles at Tassat Group, Clovis Capital Management, and Cherry Valley Solutions. In his free time, Jeffrey enjoys watching college football, firefighting, doing small construction/fix-up projects, and getting out into nature. He dreams of building a jeep from the ground up. His favorite TV show is Bad Monkey.

Elana Mass, Associate Director of Development, Institutional Giving

Elana Mass comes to NY Sun Works with a passion for sustainable communities and a background in urban and environmental policy. She taught in the Urban Studies program at Long Island University for many years and, as an urban planning consultant, helped NY metro area communities develop their long-range vision for growth and assess the environmental impacts of proposed projects. She holds a BA in political science from Tufts University and a Master’s in urban planning from NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service. At NY Sun Works, Elana oversees institutional giving. She enjoys spending time with her family, and gardening, and is active in her community’s sustainability initiatives.

Joseph Shawyer, Associate Director of Communications

Joseph comes to NY Sun Works following over a decade working across Europe, the Middle East and Asia in the humanitarian sector. He is most excited about contributing to NY Sun Work’s outreach efforts and seeing how communication can support the organization’s growth. Joseph’s bucket list includes finishing a script for a mythological horror movie set in Norway and brewing a successful beer in time for Oktoberfest. His favorite film is Grizzly Man by Werner Herzog.

Madeline Turner, Program Development Manager

After graduating from the University of Michigan, Madeline Turner joined a fellowship in Detroit that allowed her to learn how to grow food on a working farm and expand access to fresh and nutritious produce through home and community gardening. As Program Development Manager with NY Sun Works, she primarily works with new school partners to design lab spaces and secure funding for their Hydroponic Classrooms. Madeline lives in Brooklyn and spends her spare time at farmers markets, updating her Fantasy English Premier League team, and listening to Taylor Swift’s latest album.

Cindy Lee, Graphic Designer

Cindy Lee is a native New Yorker with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts. Her keen eye for clean, engaging visuals and thoughtful design helps audiences connect with key messages. Proud to work with the great team at New York Sun Works, Cindy is dedicated to advancing their mission of sustainability science and climate education.

Amanda Low, Development & Community Engagement Manager

Amanda Low has a Bachelor’s in environmental science from the University at Buffalo and attended UC San Diego’s graduate program in climate science and policy. As part of the Development team, she works on projects for external outreach and coordinating events. As a prior pastry cook in hospitality, her transition to urban agriculture was fueled by a passion for all things food. In her free time, she nurtures her sourdough starter and enjoys playing pickleball

Uma Basu, Development Coordinator

Uma Basu graduated from Pitzer College with a degree in Environmental Analysis. Her passion for sustainability, climate education, and food justice comes from both her education and her love for her family’s ranch in Argentina. Outside of work Uma loves to travel, read, & paint!

Ryan Myrie, Curriculum Specialist

Ryan is a science educator with over 12 years of experience in developing an engaging student-centered learning space grounded in a growth mindset and experiential learning. Ryan is most excited about visiting schools and meeting educators! She is also really interested in seeing the Hydroponic Classrooms up close and personal. Her dream is to visit at least three African countries (Ghana, Kenya and Ethiopia). In her spare time, Ryan enjoys reality shows like Married at First Sight.

Vanessa Graves, Curriculum Specialist

Hailing from Detroit, Vanessa moved to New York to pursue a career in Anthropology, before discovering her true passion was to support black and brown students in accessing science. She went on to teach and coach within NYC charter schools for six years.  Vanessa is most excited about increasing the rigor of NY Sun Work’s curriculum and supporting teachers in implementing our curriculum. In her spare time, Vanessa loves to spend time with her friends, family, and cat (Beau). Vanessa is currently enjoying Yellowstone, White Collar, and Castlevania.

Julia Levine, Senior Curriculum Specialist & Educational Resources Manager

Julia Levine, a Penn State University graduate in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, brings teaching experiences including ESL in Ecuador and three years at Westridge Elementary School in Virginia. On the education team, she collaborates with K-5 teachers to implement Hydroponic Classroom curriculum, writes K-5 curriculum for the hydroponic lab, supports teachers with STEM Hydroponic Kits and helps with the facilitation of additional educational materials such as the Farmer Scientist Toolkits and the NYSW Library Books. Beyond work, she enjoys playing guitar, biking, and sewing in her free time.

Tanairi Taylor, Curriculum Specialist

Tanairi Taylor is a graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo and the Relay Graduate School of Education, where she studied Women’s and Gender Studies and Geological Sciences, and Middle Childhood Science Education respectively. Tanairi applies her natural, social, and educational science background, and passion for environmental justice in her work at NY Sun Works, where she collaborates with our team of educators to produce a high quality climate action informed curriculum. In her free time she enjoys gardening, dancing, and writing collaboratively with her friends and family.

Heather Holz, Curriculum Specialist

Heather Holz earned her BA in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan and an MA in Childhood Special Education from CUNY Hunter College. With nine years of teaching experience in both NYC and Florida, she has worked with diverse student populations, including those with disabilities and English Language Learners. Heather’s passion is to make sustainability science and climate education accessible to all learners. Beyond teaching, she values quality time with loved ones and stays active through hobbies like hiking, barre, and beach outings.

Sajeeda Frazier, Operations Manager

Sajeeda Frazier, former NYC STEM teacher, holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Howard University and a Master’s in Sustainability in the Urban Environment from CUNY City College. With teaching experience in precalculus, calculus, and robotics, she transitioned to sustainability at NY Sun Works as Operations Manager. Sajeeda coordinates the Grow Support Team, helping to maintain the quality of our system installations, maintenance, and teacher training. Outside work, she loves travel, family time, exploring NYC’s restaurants, and outdoor adventures with her husband and energetic husky.

Wyatt Boone, Area Manager for the Bronx, Westchester, and Northern Queens

Wyatt Boone holds a MPS in Controlled Environment Agriculture from Cornell and brings hands-on experience as a grower in D.C. and a hydroponic agriculture assistant. A former NY Sun Works Grow Support Team member, he is now an area manager and oversees schools in the Bronx, Chappaqua, and Queens. Serving as a primary contact for our Grow Support Team and partner school teachers, Wyatt ensures lab readiness and functionality. Leading a dedicated team, he provides training, guidance, and support to ensure optimal operation across all schools in his geography. Wyatt loves writing stories, cooking, and being outside with his dog.

Erin Degnan, Area Manager

Erin has been with NYSW since June 2023 and is astounded by the learning and growth opportunities that happen every day.  After spending most of her life in the NYC hospitality industry, taking a more educational and sustainable shift in her career by bringing positive learning experiences to students and teachers all over Brooklyn has been so special.  Erin is very excited to keep building strong connections with her colleagues and to keep growing beautiful plants. One thing on Erin’s Bucket List: learn to play the piano. Erin’s Current Favorite TV Show is Monk.

Spencer King, Area Manager for Brooklyn

Spencer King has worked in many stages of the food system, from popsicle farms and school farms to kitchens, grocery stores, and composting operations. Seeing the injustices of our current food system pushed him to get his graduate degree in sustainable food systems. As a Grow Support Team area manager, he ensures that our Hydroponic Classrooms are running smoothly, providing technical support and guidance to our team and partner teachers. In his free time, Spencer can be found playing music, seeing concerts, running, reading, watching baseball, or relaxing in the park with his partner.

Carlos Quintana, Area Manager for Eastern Queens, Upper Manhattan & New Jersey

Carlos Quintana is a citizen of the globe born and raised in NYC. He’s an educator who has worked for over 20 years in K-12 and higher education settings, focusing on imagining and building a world that values people, animals, plants, and the planet above profit. As a city kid, he didn’t have many opportunities to grow things, but is now an emerging hydroponics farmer. Carlos has a degree in education and sociology. In his free time, he loves spending time with his two kids playing soccer, listening to music, and having fun in the kitchen.

Nefratia Coleman, Area Manager for Lower Manhattan & Eastern Brooklyn

Nefratia Coleman, a Brooklyn native, urban farmer, and activist, brings a passion for agriculture, food sovereignty, and youth development. With six years of urban farming experience, Nefratia has managed farms, taught about food justice, and developed youth-led programs. As an Area Manager at NY Sun Works, she leads and supports the Grow Support Team, providing teacher training and mentorship. Dedicated to community education and health, Nefratia believes in the essential role of urban farming in city ecosystems. In her free time, she enjoys reading and cooking, complemented by long walks by the water.

Arneal Satram, Senior Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist/Supply Storage Coordinator

Arneal was born in New York and is currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has a passion for anything mechanical and loves working with his hands. During his 8 years of robotics competing around the tri-state area, he’s met a lot of passionate teachers and students, and is excited to collaborate with an entirely new & passionate crowd of them. While he doesn’t have much experience with growing plants yet, he is looking forward to getting his hands wet with NY Sun Works!

Jasmin Wilson, Area Manager

Jasmin transitioned from retail management to pursue a passion for food science. Graduating from Lehman College, she combines her hydroponics expertise with culinary nutrition and cultural knowledge. Jasmin builds and maintains labs, trains educators, and shares her hydroponics skills. With prior experience at BronxWorks as a youth counselor and a nutrition cooking club leader, she also volunteered at a NYC farmers market, creating digital content and connecting with the community. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, eating, music, dancing, and caring for her cat-child Smokey.

Melissa Laudenbach, CEA Operations Manager

Melissa Laudenbach is an integral member of the NY Sun Works Team, making school visits, maintaining labs and managing the Controlled Environment Agriculture Workforce Development Program operations. With a background in French, Spanish, and Environmental Studies, she seamlessly integrates her enthusiasm for plants, sustainability, and education. Melissa’s passion for growing food has sparked a deep appreciation for urban agriculture and cultivating wherever possible. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends, exploring the outdoors, and nurturing the many plants she grows at home.

Evan Alexieff, Senior Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Evan Alexieff, a seasoned home gardener with expertise in herbs and ornamental plants, holds a B.S. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Brooklyn College CUNY. In his role as a Grow Support Team member, he ensures the proper functioning of Hydroponic Classrooms. Beyond work, Evan enjoys video games and has a passion for science fiction.

Alex Lola, Senior Hydroponic Specialist & Inventory Coordinator

Alex Lola holds a Bachelor’s in environmental studies, is a certified Citizen Pruner, and has experience working for nonprofits in the urban ecology and environmental advocacy fields. Alex serves as a Grow Support Team member, training teachers on the ins and outs of hydroponics in the classroom. In his free time, Alex enjoys hiking and camping, biking around the city, and collecting more houseplants than he could ever need.

Carter Hahn, Senior Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Carter Hahn, a key member of our Grow Support Team for several years, provides crucial support to our partner teachers. His expertise leans towards the mechanical and logistical aspects, and he spends significant time at our Pfizer building workspace. Carter specializes in hydroponic activities such as light stand fabrication, ensuring proper system distribution to schools, and the maintenance or refurbishment of existing systems. In his leisure time, he indulges his creative side by playing the guitar in a band.

Trevor Moynagh, Senior Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Trevor Moynagh, with extensive outdoor gardening experience, has seamlessly transitioned into hydroponics with NY Sun Works, acquiring skills in hydroponic technology and plant science. His diverse background includes teaching English in Peru, coaching children’s tennis, and facilitating bonding activities at a daycare and after-school center. Trevor has played a crucial role in building systems at partner schools, developing first-year Hydroponic Classrooms, and providing ongoing support. He enjoys biking, traveling, music-related activities, and is always up for anything remotely fun!

Kristen Rodriguez-Salas, Hydroponic Support Team Training Specialist

As part of the NY Sun Works Grow Support Team (GST), Kristen Rodriguez-Salas blends her passion for education and urban farming. In 2013, Kristen spent the summer working on a farm in Vermont, which inspired her to look for urban agricultural opportunities when she returned to NY. She apprenticed at Brooklyn Grange, an innovative urban farming enterprise, and pursued the Horticulture Certificate program at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for a deeper understanding of plant science. She now focuses on supporting her fellow GST team members and managing logistics as the team expands.

Abisay Quevedo, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Abisay graduated in 2024 from CUNY- Hunter College earning a degree in Psychology. Abisay has over 7 years of volunteer experience; ranging from volunteering at her local rabbit rescue to volunteering in educational programs to promoting early literacy in children. Abisay hopes to one day visit Japan. She currently enjoys listening to Dr. K’s podcast called the Healthy Gamer.

Sage Cormier, Senior Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist & CEA Instructor

Sage Cormier, our Senior Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist + Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Instructor, holds an indoor agriculture degree from a NY Sun Works-affiliated program. With diverse experience on a permaculture farm and managing a kitchen, Sage provides crucial technical support to educators in partner schools. As a CEA Instructor, she works closely with partner teachers running our Urban Agriculture Workforce Development Program, offering participating schools insights from a seasoned hydroponics professional. Beyond work, Sage enjoys digital illustration, pastries, and time with her cat. She’s also studying Japanese!

Ike Fenner, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Ike has a background in environmental education and customer service with a focus on the natural world regarding plants and animals. He is most excited about seeing the crops he helps plant go from seed to harvest and inspire people to get interested in farming. Ike’s travel bucket list includes a South American adventure with a hike across the Patagonia Trail. Closer to home, he enjoys his favorite TV show House of Dragons.

Shabiha Nishi, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Nishi is a passionate advocate for the intersection of agriculture, tech, construction and environmental conservation. With diverse experiences ranging from beekeeping and real estate to owl wildlife observation, Nishi brings a unique perspective to sustainable practices. She is most excited about building hydroponics systems and educating youth about self-sufficient food production. Nishi loves traveling and dreams of witnessing the Northern Lights and enjoys unwinding with her favorite TV show, Avatar.

Kate Raphaely, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Kate graduated from Oberlin in 2022 before going on to work as an 8th Grade Science Teacher for two years before joining the GST team. Kate looks forward to interacting with the teachers and assisting them in growing fruits and vegetables for the students! Her travel bucket list includes the Zion National Park in Utah at the very top. She is currently loving The Real Housewives of New York City (pre-reboot of course).

Jade Arnold, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Jade has worked in public water systems and in the NYC Compost Project over the last 6 years. During this time, their affinity for public work and environmental projects blossomed and they are excited to be able to be part of NY Sun Works. The child of two teachers, they are most excited to help support those who choose to serve as educators in the city. Jade’s main goal in life is to complete one of North America’s divide based bikepacking routes from Canada to Mexico. Jade likes anything involving Magic the Gathering, Ursula K. LeGuin, & quilting in their downtime.

Neil Shrestha, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

A recent college graduate with experience in NYC community gardens, ecology projects, and customer service, Neil is happy to be back in the classroom working alongside teachers with this exciting technology. He’s ambitious to experiment with different crops, growing techniques, and system builds. He has dreams of traveling the world, with Bali, Yunan, and Madagascar high on the list. His current favorite TV show is Skins.

Lloyd Pyes, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Lloyd has trained and educated professionals on the newest developments in biomedical technology for almost a decade. As an experienced educator, one of his passions is guiding teachers as they foster a love for sustainability science among their students. One of his key motivators is helping teachers and students discover together where our food comes from and how to lessen the environmental impact of our consumption. Lloyd also wants to see the Mets win a World Series in his lifetime and religiously follows the PBS prime time science series NOVA.

Annie Vargas, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Annie is an an educator and advocate with over seven years of experience in environmental sustainability, social justice, and community outreach. Annie is most excited about the opportunity to create impactful change in communities by combining environmental education with social justice through the construction of hydroponic labs. Annie aspires to create a community-based urban farm and “feeding forests” that serves as both a source of fresh produce and a learning center for sustainable agriculture and environmental justice. Annie’s favorite podcast is “On Being” with Krista Tippett, which explores deep questions about what it means to be human, integrating themes of spirituality, social justice, and the environment.

Xavier Bullock, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Xavier is a social worker, a self-taught artist, and after-school art teacher who has spent most of his adult life helping children and families and pursuing his artistic interests. Through working with NY Sun Works, Xavier looks forward to exposure to new areas of learning and expanding his expertise. In his free time, Xavier enjoys running his own art show, often taking inspiration from his favorite animated TV show X-Men ’97.

Maria Carrion, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Tessa Richardson, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Tessa is a graduate of Boston University with degrees in Mass Communication and Political Science. Her passions are city policy, sustainability, and local food systems and she can’t wait to begin introducing young kids to new and delicious vegetables and to facilitate their first ever harvests! Top of her bucket list is to Thru-hike the John Muir Trail in California. Tessa’s favorite TV show is pre-2015 Survivor.

Duala Dawson, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Duala is a graduate of Apex Technical School with experience ranging from security at World Trade Center Tower 4 to sustainability education at Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Science Barge. He is most excited about meeting the team and helping introduce hydroponic and aquaponic systems to schools around the city! One thing on Duala’s bucket list is to obtain land and develop it into a homestead or campground.

Rebeca Paredes, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Rebeca is an environmentalist with over 6 years experience in the agricultural/horticulture space and a professional background as a tax professional. Rebeca is most excited about the future of alternative agriculture and the changes the next generation of scientists will bring. A keen anime fan, her current favorite TV show is Oshi no Ko. Top of her bucket list is a trip to see the Amazon.

Miguel Araujo, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Miguel Araujo, a skilled tradesman, brings hands-on agricultural expertise to our team. As a Grow Support Team member, he ensures partner school systems function optimally and trains teachers on seedling planting and maintenance. Miguel troubleshoots issues like leaks and pests, while also preparing supplementary materials for future Hydroponic Classroom builds. During his free time, he enjoys researching plants for innovative ideas, exploring new hobbies, and attending workshops on journaling and cooking.

Mikaela Charalambous, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Mikaela Charalambous, a Queens College Environmental Science graduate, discovered her passion for community advocacy and urban agriculture through internships at the Queens Botanical Garden farm and the Community Sensor Lab. Currently pursuing a graduate degree at Brooklyn College, she focuses on biosolids for urban soil remediation. Mikaela builds, maintains, and troubleshoots Hydroponic Classroom systems, empowering teachers and students. Passionate about reading, board games, cooking, and weightlifting, Mikaela adds a dynamic touch to our team.

Jonathan Betancourt, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Isabel Ksenak, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Isabel Ksenak, an environmental studies graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, discovered her passion for plants and education during her Americorps term with Grow Pittsburgh, working with high school students on gardens and urban farms. With experience at Bowery Farming, one of the largest Controlled Environment Agriculture farm companies in the U.S., and the pioneering urban farming enterprise Brooklyn Grange, Isabel now plays a valuable role at NY Sun Works, maintaining Hydroponic Classrooms and training teachers on our systems. Beyond work, she enjoys baking and hiking in her free time!

Russell Roveria-Espinoza, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Russell Roveria-Espinoza is an interdisciplinary creative with a background in art, horticulture, and education. He’s had the privilege of working with K-12 students sharing his love of nature and the arts. In his role at NY Sun Works, he provides essential support to educators in Hydroponic Classrooms, ensuring a seamless educational farming experience for students. Focused on smooth lab operations, Russell enables hands-on learning. In his free time, he explores New York’s ecosystems and histories, and he’s a proud cat parent to a pair of goblins.

Rowan Vazquez, Hydroponic Classroom Operation Specialist

Rowan Vazquez’s love of nature began with a focus on aquaculture in high school, followed by active involvement with the Billion Oyster Project and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Garden Apprentice Program. Then as a NY Sun Works intern, they contributed to Hydroponic Classroom care and office operations. Rowan’s diverse experiences include working aboard the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and completing a stone masonry internship at Greenwood Cemetery. As a Grow Support Team Operation specialist, they specialize in building, maintaining, and troubleshooting Hydroponic Classrooms in partner schools. A fun fact about Rowan is their great love for herpetology, reflected in their pets—a Cuban treefrog and corn snake.

Dahlia Jemmott-Wiley, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Dahlia Jemmott-Wiley completed high school in Manhattan and graduated from LaGuardia Community College with a focus on Environmental Science, supplemented by additional courses at FarmSchool NYC. As a dedicated member of the Grow Support Team, she offers support and maintenance to Hydroponic Classrooms and teachers in NYC public schools. Dahlia also teaches the NY Sun Works Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) summer program and provides support for the full-year CEA program. In her free time, she finds joy in gardening and baking.

Karyn Wyche, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Karyn Wyche is a devoted member of the Grow Support Team, passionate about maintaining hydroponic systems and assisting teachers in creating vibrant, plant-filled classrooms. Detail-oriented and meticulous, she finds joy in supporting teachers and helping them learn new skills, particularly ones they thought were outside of their ability or knowledge. In her free time, Karyn enjoys coaching and teaching archery, helping people discover new skills, and engaging in handcrafts like sewing, crocheting, knitting, and woodworking.

Lucy Yang, Hydroponic Classroom Operations Specialist

Lucy Yang, a Rutgers University graduate in Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources, also holds a Certificate in Environmental Geomatics. With a diverse educational background, she supplemented her major with courses in agriculture, plant/soil science, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Lucy, part of the Grow Support Team, conducts weekly maintenance visits to schools, caring for plants and hydroponic systems, and collaborating with Hydroponic Classroom teachers. Beyond work, she enjoys cafe-hopping and exploring flea and farmers markets.

Simon Collins, Head of People and Culture

As a Human Resources Manager with over seven years of progressive HR experience, Simon is dedicated to helping companies remain competitive by serving as a vital business and people resource. Simon is passionate about developing and retaining top talent and fostering a diverse and inclusive culture at NY Sun Works. During his spare time, Simon loves reading, writing, visiting museums and traveling. Currently, his favorite television shows are House of the Dragon, The Boys and Dark Matter.

Ivan Jordon, Finance Manager

Ivan Jordon has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and completed all parts of the CPA examination. He started his professional career working in accounting & finance for corporate America. After extensive experience in the world of finance, Ivan followed one of his passions and entered the world of real estate. He has now, however, returned to what he knows best, using his skills in finance and accounting to support NY Sun Works’ mission of science and sustainability. Ivan also enjoys taking advantage of the city’s diverse art and cultural scenes, as well as exploring the many different cuisines New York has offer.

Mariajose Aparicio, Finance Manager

MariaJose Aparicio holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico. Prior to joining NY Sun Works, MariaJose worked at General Electric focusing in Marketing and Business Development. She is thrilled to be part of NY Sun Works as she is passionate about the health of our environment, and creating a sustainable future for the city’s students. In her spare time, MariaJose enjoys spending time with her family and enjoying the city’s outdoor green spaces.

Melissa Arias, Purchasing Officer

Melissa Arias started as a Grow Support Team (GST) intern while studying eco-theology in grad school. She has worn many hats at NY Sun Works, including maintaining labs, training teachers, collaborating with our Education Team, managing the GST, helping design and produce our original STEM Hydroponic Kits, and now ensuring that all our schools have all the supplies they need. In her free time, Melissa is usually reading, gardening, drawing plants, making ceramics, or hiking with her pup.

Alejandro Rodriguez, Data Analyst

Alejandro is a Colombian Biomedical and Industrial Engineer with a passion for sustainable development and innovation. His professional experience includes roles as a Performance Consultant and Data Analyst at New York Sun Works, and as a Project Consultant in Colombia. Alejandro’s key areas of interest are history, science, and space. At the top of his bucket list is living on a ship and sailing the world.

Dr. Ted Caplow, Founder and Chair

Dr. Ted Caplow, an engineer and social entrepreneur, is trained in renewable energy, environmental science, and hydrodynamics. He conceived and built the Science Barge — a closed-cycle floating urban farm powered by renewables and irrigated with rainwater — that became the prototype for NY Sun Works Hydroponic Classrooms. Holding a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Columbia, an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Princeton, and a B.A. from Harvard, Ted founded NY Sun Works, BrightFarms, Fish Navy Films, and the Children’s Prize, and co-founded Caplow Manzano Architecture. He works to design novel systems, structures, and products that are inherently sustainable and resilient.

Dr. Uche B Amaechi

Dr. Uche B Amaechi has extensive experience working with educational nonprofits and has an Ed.D. from Harvard Graduate School of Education (GSE) in Cultures, Community, and Education, an Ed.M. in Technology, Innovation, and Education from Harvard GSE, an MBA from the University of Phoenix online, and a BA in Biology from Harvard. As a Lecturer on Education at Harvard GSE, he specializes in aiding education nonprofits in scaling for impact. He also contributes as an ELT coordinator at Cambridge Public Schools and advises schools and non-profits on strategy, school leadership and governance, collaboration, and building systems that support race and equity. Previously, he directed out-of-school programming in Cambridge for eight years.

Chris Collins

Chris Collins, a Holy Cross College and Albany Law School graduate, spent two decades as a litigator in NY and CA, specializing in commercial, environmental, civil rights, and securities litigation. After his legal career, Chris shifted to positions at Oracle Corp. and Sapient. Originally from NYC, he moved to San Francisco and returned in 2004 to become the Executive Director at Solar One, a non-profit promoting green energy, arts, and education. A strong advocate for non-profits, Chris co-founded NYC’s LGBT Community Services Center, Callan-Lourde Health Clinic, and chaired the LGBT Center. He also served on the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Board. After leading Solar One for seventeen years, Chris retired in 2021.

Rev. John Finley

The Rev. John H. Finley IV, an Episcopal priest, is the founding Head of Epiphany School in Boston, which provides tuition-free education for economically disadvantaged children and children who have been abused or neglected or experienced homelessness. Rev. Finley has helped launch over 30 other “Epiphany-inspired” schools across the nation and the world. He also works on college access through the Phillips Scholarship, which awards millions of dollars every year in college scholarships. A Harvard graduate, he lends his expertise to various boards, including the Charity of Edward Hopkins, Open Gate Foundation, and the Signet Society at Harvard, and, in his capacity as a priest, he serves at St. Mary’s in Dorchester, MA and in the summer, pastor at Trinity Church in York Harbor, ME.

Sarah Horowitz

Sarah Horowitz dedicates her project management and fundraising skills to pro bono work for social justice and climate related projects. Formerly at Jones Lang LaSalle, a global real estate company, she worked on the renovation of Grand Central Terminal as the Director of Programming and Events. Sarah holds a BA from Williams College and attended Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation.  Sarah has had a career that spans talent representation in NYC to public art installations at Grand Central, reflecting her commitment to creative initiatives.

Ben Powell

Ben Powell, the founder and CEO of Agora Partnerships, an international non-profit, has dedicated 16 years to empowering entrepreneurs, primarily in Nicaragua. Agora identifies small businesses with the potential to enhance communities economically and socially, offering international mentorship, consulting, and access to capital. While Ben remains active in business consulting and social impact investing, he has transitioned from the day-to-day management of Agora. With an MBA from Columbia University, Ben’s accomplishments include being named a Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation Entrepreneur, a BMW Foundation Young Leader, and an Ashoka Fellow.

Sidsel Robards

Sidsel Robards is the co-founder of NY Sun Works’ Hydroponic Classrooms initiative. As co-director of NY Sun Works from 2010 – 2019, Sidsel was instrumental in building the organization’s impact in the NYC school system overseeing new school partnerships, government relations, strategic partnerships, fundraising events, PR, marketing, and community engagement events. Currently a business consultant, Sidsel brings a deep commitment to making real change in the face of planetary health challenges and continues working to promote and build resilient food systems as a member of the board of NY Sun Works and The Mountain Roots Food Project.

Susan Tenner

Susan Tenner is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS) — an innovative community-based middle school committed to educating for environmental, social, and economic sustainability. With a Master’s degree in Education from Harvard, she brings nearly three decades of experience in education. Susan oversees the educational, operational, and financial aspects of BUGS, utilizing NY Sun Works programming in its hydroponic lab, classrooms, and community project work. Susan’s skills extend to grant writing and fundraising, and extensive Board experience, helping her lead BUGS’ success as an educational and sustainability beacon in the heart of Brooklyn.

Amanda Batten Foster, TD Bank; Associate Board Co-Chair

Amanda Batten Foster is a Corporate Citizenship Manager at TD Bank, where she manages the Vibrant Planet portfolio of TD’s Corporate Citizenship platform, the Ready Commitment. Amanda holds a Master’s in Environmental Conservation Education from NYU. Passionate about trees, underwater ecosystems, travel, and local agriculture, she brings a diverse perspective to her sustainability-focused role.

Arpi Lal, EY; Associate Board Co-Chair

Arpi Lal, a partner at Ernst and Young (EY), leads the Forensics team in NY and brings over seventeen years of expertise in regulatory compliance and investigations within the financial services sector. Specializing in fraud, anti-money laundering, and sanctions, she leads teams through program reviews, investigations, and quality reporting. As a Certified Public Accountant and anti-money laundering specialist, Arpi ensures transaction integrity and compliance. Holding a BS in Finance and Accounting from NYU, she contributes her extensive knowledge to the NY Sun Works Associate Board with unwavering dedication and strategic insight.

Dan Lee, Morgan Stanley Global Power and Utilities Group

Dan Lee is an associate at Morgan Stanley within the Global Power and Utilities Investment Banking Group. Specializing in renewable energy and clean tech, he works with companies driving the world toward a clean future. With a passion for working with bright-minded students, Dan joined NY Sun Works to help shape the next generation of climate-conscious thinkers, creators and advocates. Prior to Morgan Stanley, Dan earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Jack Paolini, UBS

Jack Paolini, an Investment Banking Analyst at Union Bank of Switzerland in NYC, holds a B.S. in Finance and Technology from Northeastern University. With global experience from living in Rome and Grand Cayman, he worked as a venture and real estate private equity analyst in Palo Alto and Los Angeles during college. Inspired by his time in the Caribbean, he founded Protect Our Future, an environmental advocacy group. Eager to champion climate-focused organizations, Jack joined the NY Sun Works Associate Board to support science, sustainability, and climate education in K-12 urban schools.

Rikhil Shah, CVC Capital Partners

Rikhil Shah is an investment executive at CVC Capital Partners, focused on the healthcare private equity strategy. Formerly an investment banking associate at J.P. Morgan in the healthcare sector, he brings a dual perspective to his role, combining financial acumen with a commitment to environmental sustainability. Passionate about helping better serve students and a climate-first approach, he seeks to extend NY Sun Works reach with corporate partnerships, Rikhil earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Julian Silverman, Fashion Institute of Technology

Dr. Julian R. Silverman, an associate professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, serves as a faculty fellow for Beyond Benign Toxicology and a module developer at the ACS Green Chemistry Institute, emphasizing the integration of green chemistry principles into the classroom. His focus extends to creating project-based research experiences for non-science students. Holding a Bachelor’s in Atmospheric and Environmental Chemistry from McGill University, he earned an M. Phil. and Ph.D. at C.U.N.Y. Graduate Center. Julian mentors with the New York Academy of Sciences, teaches, and trains for CCNY’s G.L.O.B.E. Program, introducing digital earth science labs to NYC students.

Kevin Tian, Rocky Mountain Institute

Kevin is currently a senior associate at RMI in the Climate Aligned Industries team. Prior to joining RMI, he worked at Court Square Capital Partners, Goldman Sachs, and Nomura, all in New York. Kevin received a B.A. in Economics and Minor in Business Institutions from Northwestern University.

Sharene Williams, Deloitte

Sharene Williams is a senior manager at Deloitte in its Energy, Resources, and Industrials practice. Sharene has over 15 years of experience working with and advising Utilities and Energy clients in grid modernization, decarbonization planning, DER/EV strategy and implementation, and hydrogen planning. A regular speaker at industry and other events, Sharene has also published several papers on the clean energy transition, consumer energy management behavior, and grid modernization. She has a B.S. and Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and MBA from NYU.

Michael Kang, Apollo Global Management

Michael is a Tech Lead at Apollo Global Management where he collaborates closely with its broader Sustainability team. With a passion for analytics as well as responsible investing, he tries to bring a different perspective to NY Sun Works. Michael received a B.A. in Neuroscience and Physics from Bowdoin College.
