NY Sun Works Hosts Science and Sustainability Youth Conference

On Monday, May 20, 2019, from 10:30am to 12:30pm EST, 53 students from 16 NYC public schools will be presenting their research on Sustainability Science to a sold-out auditorium of 700 students and teachers during the the 8th annual NY Sun Works Youth Conference. The Conference will also be streaming live from Symphony Space 2537 Broadway, New York, NY.
The conference, hosted by Actress Stephanie Hsu will feature 5th to 12th grade students from 16 NY Sun Works partner schools from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and New Jersey: PS 84 Jose De Diego, PS 121 Nelson A. Rockefeller, PS 196 The Williamsburg Bridge Magnet School, PS 197 John B. Russwurm, PS 199 Jessie Isador Straus, PS 233 Langston Hughes , IS 281 Joseph B Cavallaro, PS 333 Manhattan School for Children, PS 377 Alejandrina B. De Gautier, Emerson Middle School, West End Secondary School, St. Saviour High School, St. Matthias Catholic Academy, City-As-School High School, Edward R Murrow High School and Thomas Edison High School.
In addition to student presenters, CEO of New York Power Authority Gil C. Quiniones, and Founding + CEO of Renuble Tinia Pina will speak about their work in the field of science. There will be a special performance by Kenji Williams of the NASA-powered earth-from-space show Bella Gaia.
Sponsored by Broadway Stages, Cofra Foundation, ConEdison, New York Power Authority and TD Bank, the NYSW Youth Conference offers a platform to 5th to 12th grade students to share their classroom work and research, but most importantly it represents an opportunity to discover Sustainability Science as we reflect on the connections between human behavior, the use of technology, and the impact created on the environment. It is an event that empowers students to follow the path of innovation as we look for solutions to the environmental challenges of our time.
Past conferences have featured student-proposed solutions ranging from how to capture carbon while encouraging plant growth, to combining and balancing multiple ecosystems and creating energy and waste audits for school buildings. The conference will include a youth press team, consisting of students from participating schools, who will be covering the event live as well as conducting interviews with presenters and special guests.
