Students Growing for a Cause
November 20, 2018
This year we developed a program to help our students and teachers distribute the 70,000 lbs of food grown collectively grown in our greenhouse classrooms throughout their communities – many of which are food deserts – at school events, farm stands, and food pantries.
We kicked of our Grow For A Cause initiative with a new partnership with Communities for Healthy Food at their West Harlem pantry. In preparation for Thanksgiving, students at PS84, PS123, PS157, and Thomas Edison Career and Tech HS allocated growing systems specific to the pantry.
The students celebrated giving back by harvesting crops including Kale, Mustard Greens, Bok Choy, Arugula, Basil, Red Leaf Lettuce, Green Leaf Lettuce, Butterhead Lettuce and Romaine Lettuce.
The crops were distributed over several hours at the 4th Annual Pre-Thanksgiving pantry distribution to a very enthusiastic crowd of customers.
A big THANK YOU to our partner schools for their generosity and time!
